the acutance given for sharpness lens measurement corresponds to a challenging use case (viewing distance 1m, size of document width: 1.5m)

Acutance (Edge Acutance/Texture Acutance)
An objective measure of sharpness which takes into account the sensitivity of the human visual system to specific spatial frequencies and the viewing distance of an image. Edge acutance refers to the ability of a photographic system to show a sharp edge between contiguous areas of low and high illuminance. Texture acutance refers to the ability of a photographic system to show details without noticeable degradations.

... in traditional photography, sharpness or lack of sharpness is related to the quality of the optics. In digital photography, optical blur is usually corrected by digital processing as sharpen filters. It is also well known that these types of filters increase image noise. Therefore, sharpen filters are often applied selectively on images, particularly on parts which are likely to be edges, which are in general parts with a high enough local contrast. Parts of the image, with more subtle variations may receive different processing. As a consequence, it seems necessary to introduce two concepts of sharpness. The first one is related to edges with "high enough" contrast. The second one is related to the quality of textures …

Acutance is a perceptual measurement designed to answer the question, "how sharp does the image look?" ... It is calculated from MTF (SFR), a model of the human visual system Contrast Sensitivity Function (CSF), and viewing conditions (image height and viewing distance).
Validation of Acutance ...
Acutance ... has been the subject of a significant amount of verification work correlating Acutance measurements to JNDs (Just Noticeable Differences). This work is described in the set of documents, "CPIQ 2.0 Specifications & Test Methods, which includes: Acutance SFR, Color Uniformity, Lens Geometric Distortion, Chromatic Aberration & Subjective Evaluation methods", available from http://www.i3a.org/resources/.
