Sun Position Compass

Cloudy days are often bad news for location photography not only because of their unflattering flat lighting and grey skies, but also because in obscuring the sun they make it difficult to judge the best time of day to execute a future shoot, when the scene will be lit to its best advantage.
The Photographers' Sun Compass, is a superb tool to give landscape, travel and architectural photographers all sunrise and sunset positions throughout the year. The compass has recently been upgraded to include the sun's maxium year round height too.
Using the compact compass will help you pre plan a shoot and ensure the sun is where you want it.
Simply line the compass with the North. The months of the year are indicated on the base and you can see where the sun rises and sets. The instruction leaflet has a table with the hours of daylight throughout the year. This enables you to plot the course of the sun throughout the day. To determine where the shadows will form, the compass can show you where the maximum height of the sun will reach throughout the year.
Contrary to popular parlance, the sun does not rise in the east and set in the west, so much as easterly and westerly directions. Finding those exact directions is the root of the problem.
The Photographers' Sun Compass works world-wide, but for local ease of use the indicators are biased for different latitudes.
The instructions and month indicators on the compass side of the unit are based around latitude 50 degrees, i.e. London England, but are usable for all areas between latitudes 45 degrees and 55 degrees, such as: Europe USA and Canada. In addition a simple table in the instructions allows the device to be used world-wide.
It's not only useful for photographers. It helps those considering buying a new house to determine where the sun will fall. If you've been told the garden has sun all year round you can check the facts. That's a small price to pay for such a potentially expensive mistake.
