Bruce Springsteen and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band share a notable musical connection centered on the song “Blinded by the Light.” Springsteen originally wrote and recorded the track for his 1973 debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., but it was Manfred Mann’s Earth Band cover, released in 1976, that became a massive hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1977.
This cover remains Springsteen’s only number-one single as a songwriter, a fact he acknowledged with mixed feelings due to significant lyrical changes. Manfred Mann replaced Springsteen’s line “cut loose like a deuce” with “revved up like a deuce,” which was frequently misheard by audiences as “wrapped up like a douche.” Springsteen publicly joked that the controversy may have helped the song’s chart performance, though he admitted he was upset by the misheard lyrics and altered wording.
Manfred Mann’s Earth Band also covered other Springsteen songs, including “Spirits in the Night” and “For You,” helping to introduce Springsteen’s work to wider European audiences during his early career. While Springsteen’s original versions are celebrated for their poetic realism, Mann’s arrangements are often praised for transforming the songs into distinct, progressive rock anthems, with “Blinded by the Light” serving as the most prominent example of this successful reinterpretation.
