Gleich vorweg: Nein, ich kenne das Objektiv auch nicht. Aber da ich gerade am googeln war, hab' ich 2 Kommentare ergoogelt. Bist Du ausreichend des Englischen mächtig?

It lacked that biting sharpness I was looking for and the minimum focus (20ft) was awfull. After about 10-12 years shooting with the Vivitar I decided to buy a Sigma AF 400mm F5,6 APO. What a difference ! Up to this day I am still shooting with the Sigma and most of my work get published, as I am a calendar publisher here in Namibia. Hope the information is of any value."
Dafür kann's doch eigentlich gar nicht billig genug sein, oder?

Ich kann zwar nicht mit irgendwelchen irgendwo aufgelesenen Gerüchten dienen, aber dafür habe ich ein Vivitar 5,6/400.
Es gab allerdings mehrere Versionen. Ich habe das Vivitar TX. Das ist ein sehr kompakter 8-Linser, der später vom Hersteller Tokina unter dem eigenen Label angeboten wurde. Dieses Objektiv ist erstaunlich gut. Es ist schon bei Offenblende etwas schärfer als das Nikon 80-400 und das Sigma 50-500. An kontrastreichen Kanten sieht man CA (gut herauszurechnen) und mitunter Purple Fringing (natürlich nicht herauszurechnen).
Wenn es das TX ist, würde ich es nehmen. Wenn es das ältere lange Vivitar ist (ich meine mich zu erinnern daß es zu erkennen ist an einer gummierten Grifffläche am Tubus zusätzlich zum Entfernungsring), dann würde ich es zunächst ausprobieren.
